Renault will test a blockchain project to certify the conformity of its vehicles.
The XCEED project is implemented at the Douai plant with several equipment manufacturers
Renault will test a blockchain project to certify the conformity of its vehicles. Renault’s Bitcoin Pro project was launched in 2019 with several partners from the automotive industry, including Continental, Faurecia, Plastic Omnium and Saint-Gobain. Each party retains control of their data and their confidentiality.
The system allows parties to monitor and certify the compliance of components and sub-components. So far, it has accumulated over a million documents and has reached a speed of 500 transactions per second. The solution uses Hyperledger Fabric and was built with assistance from IBM .
Odile Panciatici, VP Blockchain, Groupe Renault said:
We are convinced that the blockchain is a vector for the transformation of the automotive industry (…) In the automotive industry, where we interact with multiple players outside the company, our suppliers, our customers, independent distributors, etc. ., the uses of such technology are multiple.
Blockchain to respond to regulations
Designed and deployed with major players in the automotive industry, this tool makes it possible to be more responsive and more efficient in an increasingly demanding regulatory context. New regulations for market surveillance is in effect entered into force on 1 st September and involves a proliferation of regulatory controls of vehicles already on the market. The entire production chain must therefore adapt its structure to respond to the authorities within reduced deadlines.
In addition to XCEED, Renault was a founding member of the alliance called MOBI, launched more than two years ago. Alongside Ford, the Renault Group worked on the vehicle identity standard. Assigning an identity to a car allows many use cases, from tracking the life cycle of a car.
